Explainer videos may be the best way for a business, of any size, to really engage and excite their customers! Here is an in-depth look at what they are and how they can help you increase your sales!

What is an Explainer Video?

Just what is  an explainer video? Well, it is a video that exactly
embodies the definition of the word Explain

/ik’splan/ verb

Make (an idea, situation, or problem) clear to someone by describing it in more detail or revealing relevant facts or ideas.

Synonyms: describe, give an explanation of, make clear, make intelligible, spell out, put into words; elucidate, expound, explicate, clarify, throw/shed light on; gloss, interpret

Oxford Dictionary

The perfect explainer video is one that quickly and clearly gives your target audience…

  • A precise understanding of what your product or service is,
  • Why it fulfills their desire and/or needs and
  • How they can easily acquire these products or services for their own use…

All in about 90 seconds…. Bang!

Explainer Videos Break Down Into Several Style Categories…

There are a wide range of styles that these type of videos can be produced in. If done expertly, any one of these production types can have a tremendous impact on the target audience. Here are a few of the different styles…

Cartoon Animation Videos

An explainer video using animated cartoon characters and props to demonstrate a product or service.

Animated Cartoon Video Example…

Whiteboard Animation Videos

In this type of animation…  Pictures and text are drawn on a virtual “whiteboard” creating a storyboard  that progressively tells the story or communicates the message of the video. This type of technique is also called “animated doodling” and “video scribing“. Both cartoon animation and whiteboard animation make extensive use of motion graphics.

Whiteboard Animation Video Example…

Infographic Videos

Infographic videos make use of animated infographics (a visual image such as a chart or diagram used to represent information or data) to create videos that explain data (graphs, timelines, charts numerical data etc.) simply and clearly. They are great at keeping an audience engaged as they are both informational and highly visual at same time.

Infographics Video Example…

Cutout Animation Videos

Cutout animation uses the video technique of stop-motion, props and characters created using cutouts. One of the best examples of cutout animation is the popular television show South Park .

Kinetic Typography

This is “Moving Text“.  It is the technique of animating text so that it moves dynamically within a video to highlight a particular idea or to create a particular emotion in the viewer. Using this type of technique in a video can give the written text a lively, animated and spirited impact on the viewer.

Other surveys report that for some businesses… conversion rates have increased by as much as 144% on the products and services that use explainer videos for their promotion.

They have the ability to bypass language and show your customer exactly the concept and idea that you’re trying to get across.

In 90 seconds you can give much more information to a customer than would be possible by using text alone. The customer can “see” the entire concept. Videos are engaging… If it has a good “hook” in the first few seconds of your video… customers will normally watch it to the end. And, of course, if you can get them to watch it to the end then there’s a good chance that you’ll get a conversion ($$$) out of it!

And, an added benefit of customer engagement through the use of videos is…  you can increase your search engine rankings… Making it possible for more and more people to find you, your products, your services and your business on the web and on social media… And that is always a good thing!

There is a wide array of ways to publish your videos so that you get them seen broadly for maximum exposure of your product or service. These types of videos are easy to include on your social media platforms, website home pages, landing pages or product pages, or in your email marketing… and that’s just to name a few outlets. They really shine in mobile video advertising also as they can be accessed and played easily on mobile devices.

One of the great advantages of using video marketing is that many of the video publishing platforms have made it very easy to get detailed statistics on exactly how your customers are responding when viewing your videos. Through the use of these statistics you can get a very good idea of what impact they are making on your customers.

Using YouTube insights and Google Analytics are just two of the ways that you can get solid survey data on the effectiveness of your videos. And having this type of data will make it easy for you to fine tune your message in your next round of videos so that they are even more effective!

Bottom line… The use of video marketing must  be a major part of your business marketing and promotion plan or you’re going to be left behind!

Explainer Video Production: How Do You Get One Made?

Well, if you’re now convinced that you need to incorporate video marketing (especially in the form of explainer videos) into your overall promotion and marketing plan then the question is: How do you get one made?

Okay, there are three basic ways to get this done…

#1: Self-Producing Your Video…

Self producing your video

If you have the time, a little bit of expertise and are adventurous you can do it yourself! And, by the way, doing it this way is far from impossible and you could actually have a lot of fun doing it.

Also, you have the added advantage that, no one knows your product or service like you do, and what your vision is on how to present information about it to your particular customers. In promotion and marketing the personal touch is kind of unique, it really comes across well to potential customers.

They know that they are hearing about your product or service straight from you! If you keep your message simple and your video production… short and to the point… you can produce a wonderfully effective promotional tool, at a much lower cost than having it done by a freelance videographer or video production company.

Don’t be afraid to try if you have the time, inclination and enthusiasm to make one. There are plenty of resources on the web that can help you self produce and publish your own explainer video.

There are links to articles on this site that can help you get started in producing your own videos!

#2: Using a Freelance Videographer…

Freelance videographer

Budget  versus Quality  is always a concern for any business whether you are big or small!

For small businesses it is especially important that your promotion reflect the quality of your business. Maybe you would like to produce your video yourself but have concerns about the quality of the video production and how it would represent your business in the eyes of your customers. And, of course, there’s always the financial pressure to get the highest quality promotion you can at the least amount of cost.

Hiring a freelance videographer can be an excellent compromise and a viable solution to the cost versus quality problem.

Freelance videographer’s normally do very good work, at a lower price, as they are essentially a “one-man band” and are not dealing with paying a crew of specialists to produce the video. One of the added benefits of working with a freelance videographer is that you can be more involved with the video production itself and, in that way, can help craft a video that says exactly what you want to get across to your customers. Also, since there is a more personal relationship, freelance videographer’s or normally a bit more flexible on changes to the video while in production.

The only caution is that you have to do your homework well before going this route. The videographer you are considering should have some experience in producing videos like the one you have in mind.

Be sure to look at his or her references and portfolio to see what types of videos they have produced and what the quality of the videos look like before entering a contract.

#3: Hiring a Video Production Company to Do Your Video…

Video production company

Hiring a video production company to do your explainer video is the third option, and the one that most businesses will take.

Most business owners know their product well but, in their own estimation, really have no idea on how do you effectively promote it.

One of the strengths in using a video production company is that you can pick a company that has had a successful track record in making promotional videos for products just like yours. Many video production companies not only offer the high quality production of your promotional video but, also very solid advice on the promotion and marketing of your products in general.

Another added benefit is that when you work with a particular production company they can easily produce similar videos in the future for you. They will already know the style, look and feel, and type of message that you want to get across. You won’t have to “reinvent the wheel” every time you want a video made that is similar to the last one.

This is, obviously, the most expensive way to have a promotional video produced. But, it is the surest way to get a video that…

  • Represents your company well,
  • Gives a effective and to the point message to your customer on that particular product and why they should buy it and…
  • Gives you, the business owner, access to promotional information and ideas that you would not normally have access to.

Here one of my site articles that goes into more detail about how you can get your promotional videos made.

These types of video’s are proven to boost customer engagement and sales! If you’re not already using them in your promotion and marketing you better get busy! Don’t let your competition leave you behind!
