This week on the Weekly Wrap, WhatsApp is finally jumping on the stickers bandwagon and Facebook continues to invest into their Stories in hopes to catch up with Insta.

Facebook invests more into Stories in a bid to be more attractive to advertisers

  • Facebook is seeing the lowest percentage increase in revenue in 6 years, according to The Wall Street Journal
  • As Facebook’s daily engagement continues to slow down, Facebook is looking for new ways to integrate advertising
  • Stories will have targeted and measurable ad capabilities, with support for these ads in messenger to be added soon too

WhatsApp is adding long awaited stickers

  • On their blog, WhatsApp announced that they will be introducing sticker packs to the popular messaging app
  • Stickers will slowly be rolled out to Android and iPhone over the coming weeks
  • The company is also adding support for designers and developers to publish their own stickers on the app
  • The stickers are created by their in-house design team

Snapchat adds desktop functionality to its lenses

  • Snap lenses are now available to be used on a desktop computer, including on Skype, YouTube, Google Hangouts, and more
  • The feature will not come to FaceTime as Apple and Snapchat could not come to an agreement
  • Users will simply need to download the Snap Camera program, with no login needed

Facebook rolls out Messenger 4 with a range of new features

  • Messenger 4 sports a new simplified look, with 3 tabs instead of 9
  • The chats tab will display conversations had with groups and individuals
  • The people tab will allow users to find friends, watch stories and see who is active
  • The discover tab connects users to businesses, and allow them to play games, book vacations and follow news stories

Twitter is testing more new features

  • One of the features being tested are ‘ice breakers’ which prompt specific questions to users to encourage engagement
  • Status indicators would allow people to share what they’re doing in a short line under their profile
  • Twitter has also announced via a tweet that they are testing a new option for users to switch between a chronological feed and an algorithmic feed
