There will always be a bigger, better, badder fighter than you

I can’t even imagine that the day I die I would have learnt everything I need to know.

I’m a growth addict. I’m addicted to learning so I don’t think you could ever reach a point where you know everything.

I think mastery is a concept most people don’t understand because they think it’s a point you get to where you have learnt everything you can possibly learn and now you’re the best at whatever it is that you do.

But what’s really interesting is that when you look at the term mastery, it’s about the ‘forever student’ and that there’s never a time to stop learning because the journey is endless.

Whether it’s sport or business or whatever, you should be constantly putting yourself in situations where you’re around people who are better than you, sharper than you, smarter than you and have more experience than you because they constantly bring you back into check and show you there’s always more to learn.

We used to have this saying in the security game, ‘There’s always a bigger, better, badder fighter that you could come against tomorrow’.

Meaning you always have to prepare for the day that fighter comes because you never know when it’s going to happen.

It’s easy to think you’ve got to a point where you’ve got all the skills you need but that should never allow you to relax to the point where you think you’ve learnt everything.

Because the bottom line is, there’s no such thing as knowing everything and to think that there is, is arrogant.

The only people I’ve met who know everything is 15-year-old boys and girls…I don’t have one of those yet but I’ve got a few mates who do and dear god, it’s frightening.
